Johnny Ford ran for a 27-yard touchdown in the first quarter and James Charles scored on a short run in the fourth to give Florida Atlantic an 18-point lead, and the Owls held off a late UTEP comeback attempt to earn a 28-25 win on Saturday night. The loss snapped UTEP's four-game win streak heading into a first-place showdown with UTSA next week. Ford's run put Florida Atlantic (5-3, 3-1 Conference USA) up 7-3 in the first quarter. N'Kosi Perry hit LaJohntay Wester with a 39-yard touchdown pass with :02 left in the first half to send the Owls into the break with a 14-10 lead.

Zaire Mitchell-Paden punched in with 3:27 left in the third quarter to make it 21-10, and Charles' 1-yard run pushed it to 28-10 early in the fourth. UTEP mounted a comeback with an 82-yard, seven-play drive. Ronald Awatt scored on a 5-yard run with 2:50 left and punched in the two-point conversion to make it 28-18. Gavin Hardison fired a 49-yard touchdown pass to Tyrin Smith with 2:02 left. UTEP got the ball with :30 left but could not get itself in position to attempt a game-tying field goal. Perry finished with 149 yards on 13-for-26 passing and Ford finished with 93 yards on 123 carries. The Miners (6-2, 3-1) outgained Florida Atlantic 454 to 279. N'Kosi Perry set up three touchdowns on as many drives in a breakaway third quarter and Florida Atlantic held Charlotte scoreless for all of the second half for a 38-9 victory Thursday night, just hours after each university announced it will be leaving Conference USA. Perry was a crisp 9 of 11 passing for 225 yards and three TDs. Johnny Ford rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown and caught one pass for 32 yards and another score. Charlotte (4-3, 2-1) was seeking its first 5-2 start. FAU (4-3, 2-1) entered the game winless on the road but, strangely, remains undefeated in Charlotte in four games there.

Charlotte led 9-7 at halftime as Chris Reynolds found Grant DuBose at the front of the end zone with a pass from the 1-yard line on the last play of the second quarter. The 49ers twice converted on fourth-and-one during the 17-play drive. Florida Atlantic opened the second half with a four-play scoring drive when Ford hauled in a screen pass from Perry and took it to the end zone on a 32-yard catch and run. On FAU's next possession, Perry hooked up with Je'Quan Burton on a 57-yard pass to set up first-and-goal, and Malcolm Davidson carried on a nine-yard touchdown a play later as the Owls extended their lead to 21-9. Perry found Brandon Robinson with a 30-yard touchdown pass near the end of the third to lead 28-9. N'Kosi Perry passed for 329 yards and three touchdowns and Florida Atlantic rolled up 704 yards total offense in a 58-21 victory over Florida International in a Conference USA opener on Saturday. Perry completed 18 of 21 passes without an interception, compiling a passer rating of 264.5. Johnny Ford had 102 yards on 16 carries and FAU finished with 296 yards on the ground. Je'Quan Burton caught seven passes for 121 yards and a touchdown. Eleven players caught passes for the Owls (3-2, 1-0). After a 27-point second quarter led to a 34-21 halftime lead, the Owls shutout their in-state rival in the second half and Nick Tronti, Ford, and Kelvin Dean Jr. scored rushing touchdowns. FIU's Max Bortenschlager completed 12 of 27 passes for 263 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Backup Grayson James completed 7 of 12 for 56 yards. N'Kosi Perry threw for 278 yards and Florida Atlantic added 248 yards on the ground in a 45-14 victory over FCS-member Fordham on Saturday night. The Owls (2-1) led 14-7 at halftime before erupting with 31 points in the second half. Perry threw both his touchdown passes in the third quarter. After Fordham drew within 28-14, the Owls scored the game's final 17 points in the fourth. Tim DeMorat threw two touchdown passes but the Rams (0-3) managed only 237 total yards and 11 first downs. FAU had 549 yards and 32 first downs. Perry was 27-of-43 passing for the 278 yards and two scores. SEPT 13 CONFERENCE USA CO-OFFENSIVE OF THE WEEK: Florida Atlantic QB N'Kosi Perry drew his second start as an Owl and first before the home crowd in Boca Raton. The Miami transfer easily moved the ball down the field scoring on four of his nine drives, with no three-and-out drives on the day. He guided the Owls offense that totaled 541 yards and used a commanding 33:50 of game clock against a triple option offense. N'Kosi Perry threw four touchdown passes including three in the third quarter when Florida Atlantic broke the game open as the Owls defeated Georgia Southern 38-6 on Saturday. Perry dropped a pass into a sprinting Je'Quan Burton's fingertips for a 50-yard touchdown and followed that with another third-quarter strike to John Mitchell for a 19-yard score on the left side of the end zone and a 24-6 lead. Perry added a final third-quarter TD pass of 31 yards to LaJohntay Wester, though replays appeared to show the receiver out of bounds when he made the catch. However, a review confirmed the call. Georgia Southern (1-1) scored first with Logan Wright's 22-yard first-quarter run. But in the final two minutes of the half Perry threw a 19-yard touchdown to John Mitchell and Aaron Shahriari kicked a field goal for a 10-7 lead. Nick Tronti added a 3-yard touchdown run late in the game for FAU (1-1). FAU outgained the Eagles 528-254. Current FAU and former Miami Hurricanes quarterback N'Kosi Perry signed a name, image and likeness deal with Islamorada Brewery and Distillery on Wednesday. Perry signed what is believed to be the first NIL deal with a beer or liquor company for a collegiate athlete. Islamorada Brewery and Distillery said on Twitter "We are happy to announce, Islamorada Beverages is the first alcohol company to endorse an NCAA athlete through the NIL." Perry, who spent four years with the Hurricanes, started his first game for FAU this past Saturday in the Owls' 35-14 loss to the Florida Gators. During the game, the 23-year-old graduate student completed 19 of his 33 passes for 261 yards and one touchdown. FAU coach Willie Taggart named former Miami Hurricanes quarterback N'Kosi Perry the Owls' starter for their season opener against the Florida Gators on Saturday. Throughout camp, the Owls had an ongoing four-way competition, including last year's starter Nick Tronti, Penn State transfer Michael Johnson Jr. and Javion Posey. Perry, a graduate transfer, spent four seasons with the Hurricanes, completing 208 of 397 passes for 2,484 yards with 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 24 games. Perry, who graduated from Vanguard High School in Ocala, Fla., played his final game with the Hurricanes against Oklahoma State in December 2020 at the Cheez-It Bowl. Willie Taggart enters his second season at Florida Atlantic with a very crowded quarterback room. Taggart's first season in Boca Raton was overshadowed by the pandemic and the Owls ended up 5-4. But after an off-season of adding players on both sides of the ball, he believes FAU has what it takes to win C-USA's East Division. "I really like our roster. I thought we did a good job this off-season filling some needs and getting the players we needed to be efficient on both offense and defense," said Taggart while speaking at C-USA's Media Day.

"I know going into the off-season, one thing I wanted to do as the head coach was to make us a highly competitive football team. That's at every position, especially at the quarterback position, and I thought this off-season we were able to do that with the addition of (transfers) Michael Johnson and N'Kosi Perry." Perry, who transferred from Miami in April, joins an Owls quarterback room that includes holdovers Nick Tronti, Javion Posey and Willie Taggart Jr as well as Johnson. Michigan receiver Ronnie Bell caught many off guard Wednesday answering a question from the media during a virtual news conference. When asked who has been the toughest defensive back he's faced so far in fall camp, Bell singled out George Johnson, a former high school quarterback and receiver from Florida who is entering his third year with the team. "You never know what you're gonna get out of George," Bell said. "George is a very unpredictable and very good DB." Johnson, rated as a three-star receiver in the 2019 class, transitioned to the defensive side of the ball when arriving at Michigan. He has yet to appear in a game for the Wolverines but is reportedly turning some heads during camp. "His technique, how he plays the game, he doesn't necessarily do it like the rest," Bell said of Johnson. "He doesn't play like the rest of them. "It's either misleading or it's - he can catch you off-guard because he's unorthodox." Central Michigan starting running back Kobe Lewis suffered a non-contact knee injury and will have surgery Tuesday, head coach Jim McElwain announced Thursday. "The team and ourselves just feel horrible for a great leader like that," McElwain said. Under the NCAA's redshirt rules, a player can play a maximum of four games and still keep their eligibility. Because Lewis did not redshirt as a true freshman, he has an available redshirt season and an additional year of eligibility as a result of the coronavirus waiver. A bigger, stronger and faster running back duo at Central Michigan? A scary proposition for Mid-American Conference opponents. The Chippewas feature two known commodities in the backfield in Kobe Lewis and Lew Nichols III. In his three seasons in a Chippewa uniform, Lewis has amassed nearly 3,000 all-purpose yards and scored 19 touchdowns; Nichols gained 597 yards in rushing and receiving and scored five TDs in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, earning the MAC Freshman of the Year Award.

Combined, they give CMU a potent one-two punch that give defensive coordinators headaches what with their ability to not only run, but also block and catch the ball out of the backfield. "Both of them have tremendous hands, so that's a plus," CMU running backs coach Cornell Jackson said. "Both of them clearly understand pass protection, so that's a plus. "Kobe's more of a slide and glide and try to find that sweet spot. Lew's the kind of guy that once he puts his foot in the ground, if you're in his way, he's taking a body part with him. FAU may not have had a player selected in the 2021 NFL draft, but that didn't stop a couple of former Owls from finding an NFL home. A few hours after the draft ended Saturday evening, running back BJ Emmons signed with Seattle Seahawks while linebacker Leighton McCarthy signed with the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as undrafted free agents. Emmons, who was the No. 4 running back prospect in the nation out of high school and played at Alabama in 2016, transferred to FAU and redshirted the 2018 season after spending 2017 at Hutchinson Community College (Hutchinson, Kan.). - Sun-Sentinel
